Village alerts residents to suspicious fires

The Village of Canal Flats is asking residents to be alert following two recent suspicious stump fires.

On April 3 at 1:30 p.m. Canal Flats Fire Rescue was dispatched by 911 for a stump on fire north of the subdivision (Tamarack Street) and Martin Morigeau School. It appears an accelerant was used to ignite the fire.

And then on April 4 at 1:30 p.m., the public works department was notified of another stump on fire around 45 metres from the initial fire, the village reported on its website.

“We are asking residents to be aware of the hazards and report fires or suspicious individuals to 911. This will ensure the appropriate actions are taken.”

The village has been in contact with the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) and RCMP.

“BCWS is taking this very seriously given the dry area and is assessing the need for a forensic investigator, the village said.
