Columbia Valley RCMP Report

By Cst. Chris Joy

This past week, May 7 through to May 14, Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 58 calls for service. Here are a few examples of some of the files that were dealt with by our officers this week.

Propane tank shooting report

On May 12, Columbia Valley RCMP received a report from the Fairmont Hot Springs area that someone might have been target shooting at a propane tank. Columbia Valley RCMP investigated the matter and was unable to determine if the incident had occurred. The RCMP would like to remind the public that shooting at a propane tank or any other pressurized cylinder or explosive is extremely hazardous and should be avoided.

Injured hiker

On May 12, Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of an injured hiker on the ‘Sand Cliffs’ near Canal Flats. It was reported that the female had fallen, injured her leg and was unable to walk out of the area. Columbia Valley Search and Rescue was advised of the situation responded and evacuated the injured hiker to a waiting ambulance.

Theft of vehicles under investigation

On May 14, at approximately 2:48 a.m., Columbia Valley RCMP responded to a report of a theft of vehicles in Invermere.

The complainant advised that someone had stolen a white Toyota Highlander from their driveway and the suspects returned shortly after and stole a second vehicle. Responding police officers intercepted one of the vehicles but the pursuit was discontinued due to the excessive speed of the suspects and as one of the vehicles had been close to ramming a police vehicle. A stolen Volkswagen was recovered shortly after as it had run out of gas in Radium and will be examined by RCMP Forensics in an attempt to identify the suspects.

Vehicle break-ins

On May 14, Columbia Valley RCMP responded to a number of vehicle break-ins in the Invermere area that had taken place in the early morning hours. Various items were taken from vehicles ranging from pocket knives to loose change. As only vehicles that were left unlocked were targeted the community is reminded to ensure that vehicles are locked when left unattended. If anyone observed any suspicious vehicles or persons in Invermere in the early morning hours of May 14 please contact the Columbia Valley RCMP.
