Columbia Valley RCMP Report
This past week, September 18 to September 25, Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 73 calls for service. The following is a summary of some of the files our officers responded to.
Officer finds owner of found bike
On September 18, Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of bike found in Lakeview area.
Police picked up the bike and determined it was a higher end Kona mountain bike. As no
matches were found on the serial number as being lost or stolen, an officer contacted Elemental Bike shop in the valley and was able to determine who had originally purchased the bike. In this instance, police were able to think outside the box and determine the owner of a valuable item thanks to the cooperation of a local business owner; however, the process is much simpler if the owner is able to supple the serial number of an item at the time of a reported theft.
Without serial numbers, it is difficult to reunite items with owners and forward charges if items are located in the possession of an offender. It is always a good idea to record serial numbers somewhere you can access in the event of a theft or a lost item.
Technology provided by HEART team instrumental in locating deceased man
On September 20, Columbia Valley RCMP was on Lake Windermere liaising with an
independent volunteer water search and rescue team from Manitoba (HEART), who were
brought in by the family, when the remains of the drowning victim from September 16 was
located. Police assisted with the recovery and transportation of the deceased to the shore
where the Coroner took custody. The technology provided by the HEART team was
instrumental in locating the deceased, helping to bring closure to the family.
