Columbia Valley residents get water-wise with Wildsight

Submitted by Wildsight

Columbia Valley residents are a bit more water-wise thanks to a series of hydrologically-focused events this fall. From a games night to a field tour to a combined paddle and science lesson, local residents gained a better understanding of water in Invermere and Radium Hot Springs.

First up was a ‘Whodunnit’ game and potluck night in September, where the small but enthusiastic crowd solved a fun water quality mystery to investigate the challenges of local water management.

Next was a tour of the Radium water treatment and wastewater facility, where locals saw firsthand how the water here is safeguarded, treated and managed. Justin Nielsen, acting public works foreman, led the tour of the water treatment and wastewater facility. Participants shared that he was a wealth of information as he shared his passion about the local water treatment processes.

“Participants had many questions answered and they were blown away by the process, and they learned a lot,” shared Jessie Caza, Wildsight educator and events organizer.

The series wrapped up with more than 30 paddlers joining in on Wildsight Invermere’s annual BC Rivers Day Paddle. The day started with an overview of Columbia Basin waterways before undertaking a water-quality testing activity then jumping in the boats to paddle downstream.

The group tested the water again at the end of the paddle in Radium. They found some changes to the water quality parameters, leading to questions about how land use can impact water.

All told, more than 60 participants from these three events now have a deeper understanding, and appreciation for water in the Columbia Valley!

Wildsight is grateful to the Columbia Valley Community Foundation for this opportunity to educate locals all about this precious resource.
