Detachment to launch on-line crime reporting system
By Stephanie Stevens
The Columbia Valley RCMP detachment is gearing up to launch an on-line crime reporting system for certain types of property crime that otherwise may go unreported.
Citizens will have the on-line option for crimes such as damage/mischief to property under $5,000, theft of bicycles under $5,000, theft under $5,000, theft from vehicle under $5,000 and lost property, as long as certain conditions are met, such as no witnesses, none of the items are firearms, none involve personal identity, license plates or decals.
“Initially I was a little reluctant to utilize this,” said detachment commander Sgt. Darren Kakuno. “I don’t like to lose the face-to-face interaction. But after some thought, I realized it may be a really good thing. We may find we capture a lot of those incidents people are reluctant to tell us for fear of wasting our time. It is really important that we hear about all the crimes, even the small ones, to help us identify trends and that sort of thing.”
Once an on-line complaint is created, the complainant will receive a file number and the file will be send to the detachment.
The aim is to alleviate pressure on the Operation Communications Centre, detachment staff and frontline members, as well as innovate and modernize the detachment.
