Edgewater meeting focused on Post Office and housing

Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Electoral Area G Director Roberta Schnider is hosting an Edgewater community meeting the first week of June to provide an update on the Post Office Project and the potential for a housing development project within the community.

“Through the community-led Edgewater Hub Initiative, it was identified that maintaining a post office in Edgewater was a priority for residents. The RDEK has been actively working since early 2023 to seek an alternative location for a post office as the current location needs to be replaced. In order to do that, we would need to establish a new service to fund a new building,” explained Schnider.

“We had hoped to bring the issue to a referendum later this year; however, this week received some news that may affect the viability of this option.”

A community meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, June 3, at 7 p.m. at the Edgewater Community Hall. Schnider and RDEK staff will provide background on the project and share the latest developments.

“We wanted to schedule a meeting with the community so that residents could be updated on these latest developments prior to the Post Office Project going to board for consideration at the June RDEK board meeting,” said Schnider.

In addition to the post office, housing was another priority identified by residents. To help gather community input, the meeting agenda will also include discussion on the potential for a housing development project in the downtown core.

“I know both of these issues are important to the community and I hope to see a good turnout on the third,” added Schnider.
