Electoral Area G Volunteer of the Year honoured
Norm Julien has been officially recognized as the 2023 Electoral Area G Volunteer of the Year.
“Norm has long been a patient and hardworking volunteer who quietly steps in to fill a gap wherever needed. He has played a role in building, maintaining, or supporting so many of the recreational amenities that Edgewater enjoys and has had a profound impact on his community,” said Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Electoral Area G Director Roberta Schnider.
After retiring from the Rocky Mountain School District as a supervisory employee responsible for maintenance of buildings and grounds, Norm volunteered weekly for many years at Edgewater Elementary School for their “One to One” reading program.
He has been involved with many projects generated by the Edgewater Recreation Society (ERS), including the building of the new backstop at Wittman field, and the rebuilding of Frank’s Rink, specifically, many hours spent coordinating between support partners, recruiting volunteers, and working as the finishing carpenter.
He has also helped with the Steamboat Mountain Music Festival several times and is always ready to help out with the ERS in any way needed.
Currently, Norm is one of three Rink Committee volunteers who make ice at and maintain Frank’s Rink.
When a group decided to organize a Pickleball Club at Edgewater Elementary School, Norm was – and is – there as a player/volunteer. When play was moved outdoors, he painted lines on the rink pad and in season several times a week sets up nets and returns them to storage.
Director Schnider formally recognized Norm Thursday evening at a celebration in his honour at the Edgewater Community Hall.
