Harvest celebration with a spin Sept. 28

By Stephanie Stevens

It’s a new spin on a traditional harvest celebration at Groundswell Community Greenhouse this Sunday, Sept. 28.

The fall gathering has been happening for several years, but with a mind to collaborating as a team, Groundswell has teamed up with Columbia Valley Food and Farm (CVFF) and the Columbia Valley Food Bank (CVFB) to take the event to the next level.

Groundswell Network Society (GNS) board chair Michelle Wall said the aim is not just to celebrate the local harvest, but to foster community connections and raise awareness (and funds) for food security, sustainability, and recovery in the Columbia Valley.

“We’re (GNS, CVFF, CVFB) bringing the community together to celebrate the harvest, enjoy local flavours, and support all the amazing people and organizations working to make food more accessible and sustainable in the Columbia Valley,” said Wall.

“It’s all about good food, good company, and growing something meaningful as a community.”

While the event has centred around food in previous years, Sunday’s festivities will include games and a scavenger hunt, goats to pet, a photo booth, music, trivia, hot dogs from the Valley Dawgs cart, marshmallow toasting and food offerings from seven different valley chefs who have been paired with valley farms to create tantalizing tidbits for tasting.

There will also be fresh pressed cider, a live pie auction and silent harvest bouquet auction.

Entry is $5 (children 10 and under free), with tastings at $5 each or you can purchase a passport for $55 that includes 10 tastings and a drink.

The event will start at 4 p.m. and is open to all.
