99-year-old woman robbed while helping stranger
An act of kindness toward a stranger led to a 99-year-old Invermere woman being robbed last Friday evening.
At about 8:30 p.m. Jan. 12, Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of a robbery from the elderly resident.
She told police that an unknown female who appeared to be in her 60s and wearing a black coat and hood attended her residence and asked to use her phone. Once inside the female used the phone and asked to use the bathroom; once out of the bathroom the unknown female grabbed the arm of the homeowner and dragged her down the hallway and eventually stole her wallet containing cash, some cheques, and personal identification, related Columbia Valley RCMP Detachment commander Sgt. Bob Vatamaniuck.
Police immediately attended and discovered the 99-year-old resident was not injured.
Some of the stolen articles were found outside her residence suggesting whoever stole from her just wanted the cash, Sgt. Vatamaniuck added.
Police are continuing the investigation and are reminding homeowners to be cautious when allowing unknown people into your home and generally avoid if it possible.
