Wonky lights, no insurance, no licence and impaired

The following is a checklist to follow for a sure-fire way to get arrested.

Drive a vehicle with an obvious operational issue, such as a burned out headlight or taillight around about when pubs are closing. Check.

Ensure said vehicle is not insured and has plates unrelated to said vehicle. Check.

Do not have a driver’s licence. Check.

Drink enough to fail a roadside alcohol screening device. Check.

Columbia Valley RCMP tracked down a four-check offender early this morning (Jan. 3) near the Invermere crossroads.

At about 1:30 a.m., an RCMP officer was patrolling south on Highway 93/95 near the Tim Horton’s in Invermere when they observed a silver Nissan travelling north on Highway 93/95 that had some non-working headlights.

Police followed the vehicle and determined that the licence plates were expired and not registered to any particular vehicle. The vehicle was eventually pulled over and further investigation revealed that the Nissan was not insured.

Once the driver was confronted it was determined that they did not have a valid driver’s licence and further admitted to consuming liquor prior to getting behind the wheel, reported Columbia Valley RCMP Detachment commander Sgt. Bob Vatamaniuck.

Displaying signs of obvious impairment, the driver was arrested and taken to the Columbia Valley Detachment for a Criminal Code Impaired Investigation

The driver produced two breath samples, both of which were over .08. Charges are being recommended, Vatamaniuck said.
