Northern rubber boa calls Kootenay home
There are boa constrictors in Kootenay National Park?
Known as the northern rubber boa, these nocturnal snakes can grow up to 85 cm. They are rarely seen but live around the hot pools in Sinclair Canyon. Rubber boas can live up to 30 years and eat small prey like mice.
Rubber boas have “special concern” status under the Species At Risk Act, and Kootenay National Park is the northern limit of its territorial range. The heat from the pools provide rubber boa snakes with much needed thermal energy.
Never attempt to pick up or handle wildlife in any national park – it is illegal.
