Officer injured; hunt on for suspect
An RCMP officer is in hospital following a a vehicle theft incident on the Trans-Canada Highway about 22 km west of Golden.
This afternoon, near the weigh scales west of Golden, RCMP conducted a vehicle stop in connection with a possible theft. The suspect in the stopped vehicle failed to comply with police direction, and subsequently stole a nearby vehicle.
During this incident an RCMP police officer was injured with what is believed to be non-life threatening injuries.
Social media reports note a shooting occurred but nothing has yet been confirmed.
“There is now an active search underway for the suspect in this incident, with multiple police resources responding. Please be advised it is very early during an evolving police investigation, and information at this time, such as direction of travel, is still limited,” reported S/Sgt. Rob Vermeulen, RCMP’s Senior Media Relations Officer with E Division Communication Services.
“Although it is recognized that the public may want to be of assistance in this matter, at this time police are unable to provide any further information. Updates will be provided when feasible,” he added.
The Trans-Canada Highway is currently closed and it is not yet known when it will re-open. More details will be published when available.
