Oil drums illegally dumped at Canal Flats Transfer Station
The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) is reminding the public how to properly dispose of used oil after several drums were left at the Canal Flats Transfer Station.
“There are ample options for the safe disposal of used oil around the East Kootenay, which is why it is both disheartening and incredibly frustrating for our staff to have arrived at the Canal Flats Transfer Station this week to find several drums of oil improperly discarded, at least one of which spilling out on the ground,” the RDEK noted on social media.
“One litre of used oil can contaminate up to one million litres of fresh water. When dumped improperly on the ground it can kill plants and pose a threat to animals and wildlife.”
The RDEK asks anyone with information regarding the person or persons responsible for illegally dumping these drums is asked to contact the Environmental Services Department at the RDEK’s Cranbrook office at 1-888-478-7335 or the Provincial RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277.
Please ensure you properly dispose of your used oil. To look up a location nearest you, visit: bcusedoil.com and click on Find A Recycling Centre – or contact the RDEK and it will provide a list of nearby depots.
