Police investigating livestock transport truck rollover

Shortly before 6 p.m. on October 31, Columbia Valley RCMP responded to a collision in the westbound lanes of Highway 93, just north of Kootenay Crossing.

A livestock transport truck had been travelling westbound on Highway 93 when it left the roadway and collided with the support structure curb. The driver was extracted from the vehicle by bystanders, and fortunately was not seriously injured.

Columbia Valley RCMP police officers, Parks Canada employees, a local towing company and local ranchers worked together to contain and assist the animals.

A local veterinarian also responded to help out the injured hogs. Sadly, some of the animals were deceased at scene.

“It’s not the typical collision we see in our area,” said Cpl. L-P. Gendron-Fafard, “but we are thankful for our local partners and everyone else who assisted in this matter.”

The traffic flow was slightly impeded during the investigation but Highway 93 has now been fully re-opened.
