Parks Canada is in the midst of a $5.7 million in construction and renovation work at Kootenay National Park’s Radium Hot Springs.

According to Parks Canada projects will occur at Radium Hot Springs, located in Kootenay National Park, with work that will impact the restaurant / gift shop, pedestrian bridge and walkways, roof top patio, parts of the grounds and some areas throughout the Aquacourt building.

Radium Hot Springs is a federally designated heritage building. Constructed between 1949 and 1951, the Radium Hot Springs facility was the first major post war building project in the western parks.

Construction and renovations began in 2016 and will continue through 2017. Parks Canada will make every effort to minimize the disturbance to visitors; however, some temporary closures may be required.

Work is being done to protect a federally designated heritage building (FHBRO designated) and pool facilities for future generations of Canadians to enjoy and ensure the facility meets current building codes and safety requirements.

Parks Canada is also working to educe the facilities environmental footprint using modern heating technology and improve accessibility and modernize services.

Parks Canada says visitors should expect some visible construction, noise and closures to sections of the facility while work is completed. Some walkways and stairs will be closed and pedestrian traffic will be redirected. The Redstreak Campground trail will also be closed.

Projects include

Restaurant / Gift Shop renovation: Create themed diner; Replace all mechanical and electrical systems; Create a new floor plan for the space. Planned completion is January 2017.

Mechanical and electrical system upgrades: Replace out dated and inefficient mechanical and electrical components in the main building and swimming pools with new energy efficient technology; Upgrade geothermal building heating and domestic hot water systems;  Replace all water pipes and valves;  Replace one emergency power generator; Replace the de-chlorination system; Enhance the fire sprinkler system. Planned completion is May 2017.

Work is expected to be completed within the calendar year 2017.

Roof-top patio: Multi-phased project includes replacing sundeck and pool level roofs, repairing water damage. Planned completion: April 2017.
