Reclamation work underway along Kootenay FSR

CertainTeed Canada Inc. would like to notify anyone travelling the Kootenay Forest Service Road (FSR) about the earth works that have taken place at the 7.5 km area.

The works are related to the reclamation of a borrow pit used to produce aggregate for the Kootenay FSR construction.

In June 2024, contractors began restoring the site contour and replacing top soils. The site is being seeded with native species to provide winter forage for ungulates.

The selected species, include grasses which do not reabsorb nutrients to their roots in the fall, but rather retain the nutrients in their leaves, effectively creating standing hay.  This process is known as “curing on the stem,” and these species are critical to maintaining elk, sheep, and deer during the winter.

CertainTeed is requesting that the public assist the restoration efforts by remaining outside the reclaimed area to prevent the introduction of weeds, and to allow the seeded species to establish important wildlife habitat.
