Spur Valley duo set Golfathon record

Spur Valley Golf Resort Head Professional Ryan Fisher joined forces with 15-year-old junior golf Nolen Miller on Thursday August 14, in a monumental effort for the ALS Society of BC (ALS BC) as part of the 20th annual PGA of BC Golfathon for ALS.

This year marks Spur Valley’s fourth participation since 2020, and they have raised over $8,000 for the cause since then. The duo set a new course record for the most holes played while raising a record-breaking $2,115 for the cause.

Beginning their day at 7:15 a.m., Fisher and Miller navigated the course with determination, each completing an astonishing 125 holes for a combined total of 250. This incredible feat, which required more than 13 hours of continuous play, showcased a remarkable display of stamina and commitment. They were supported throughout their journey by caddies and scorekeepers Serena Pasko and Brooklyn Haley, who also ensured the course was clear for their rounds.

“Thank you so much for letting us participate in the ALS golf a thon,” said Ryan Fisher. “A highlight of our day was playing through Men’s night and lapping some of the players. The absolute highlight was on our last 2 rounds, hearing the cheering from the patio as Nolen and I finished. It was such great support from the men’s group. We would like to thank the Ladies Glitz and Glam tournament and couples night for their donations as well.”

Nearby Edgewater, known for its small-town charm and big heart, rallied behind the duo to help them exceed their fundraising goal of $2,000.

Since its inception, the PGA of BC Golfathon for ALS has raised over $3 million, directly benefiting registered patient programs and services that provide essential support, including a psychological treatment program, Camp Alohi Lani summer camp for children affected by ALS, and vital equipment to enhance patients’ quality of life through the Robert R. Heinrich Equipment Loan Program.

“We are grateful for Spur Valley Golf Resort’s return to the Golfahton for ALS after a short hiatus” said Donald Miyazaki, Executive Director of ALS BC. “The programs are always special when they take place in small towns and the support that Ryan and Nolen received from their community speaks to how well-respected they are. The funds they raised will go and help many affected by ALS.”

This year’s Golfathon is proudly presented by the Pacific Blue Cross Foundation, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the health and well-being of British Columbians. The foundation supports communities across the province, ensuring that vital programs, such as the PGA of BC Golfathon for ALS, continue to make a meaningful impact.

The ALS Society of BC extends its heartfelt gratitude to the PGA of BC, whose unwavering commitment has made the Golfathon for ALS a cornerstone fundraising event for two decades. With approximately 700 dedicated golf professionals at almost 200 golf facilities across British Columbia, the PGA of BC plays a vital role in advancing the game of golf while fostering strong leadership in the community through charity events and volunteering.

Their mission to promote, develop, and grow the sport aligns perfectly with the Golfathon’s goal of making a lasting impact on ALS patients and their families.

A special thank you to Spur Valley Golf Resort, and deepest gratitude to the incredible efforts of golfers Nolen and Ryan, as well as the support team of Serena and Brooklyn, and to the staff, volunteers, sponsors, and donors who made this event possible. Your collective generosity continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve.

The ALS Society of BC’s PGA of BC Golfathon for ALS fundraising program has a lofty goal of raising $250,000 in 2025 through more than 30 events, which took place at various golf facilities throughout British Columbia. 100% of funds raised in BC will stay within the province, directly benefiting ALS patients and their families.
