Upcoming symposium to address housing needs

Community Futures East Kootenay (CFEK) is excited to be partnering with the Columbia Valley Housing Society (CVHS) to host a regional event and bring communities together to address the housing need in the East Kootenay.

The inaugural Building Attainable Housing Symposium will be happening on Thursday, December 4, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Radium Hot Springs Community Centre (pictured).

The event is designed to connect local non-profit housing providers with community leaders, housing advocates, building professionals and local government representatives. Together, communities will collaborate to develop practical, local solutions to create more attainable and workforce housing in the East Kootenay.

“Housing is at the heart of strong, healthy communities,” stated CFEK Community Economic Development Coordinator Michelle Chan.

“This symposium is a chance to come together to connect, learn, celebrate creativity and collaboration, and turn our conversations into meaningful action that builds community and creates change across our region.”

Attendees of the symposium will hear about local housing successes, available services and resources and receive tools to plan and build for sustainable growth of the housing sector. All the while, they will be building meaningful and collaborative relationships with key partners, leaders and decision makers across the region.

To get the most out of the symposium, attendees are encouraged to bring any development plans, preliminary designs and anything else they are working on to discuss in facilitated case study sessions to work on with peers and get hands-on support from presenters. “Housing affects all the communities in the East Kootenay and collaboration is key in the development of a sustainable strategy,” SAID CFEK General Manager Kerstin Renner.

“We are grateful to work with the Columbia Valley Housing Society to provide the opportunity to connect the sector and build the capacity for individual organizations as well as the region as a whole.”

To register for the symposium, individuals and organizations can go online on the CVHS website(cvhousingsociety.ca).

Registration for non-profit housing societies is free. Registrants can connect with CVHS Manager, Nicole Morgan, at [email protected] or Michelle Chan at [email protected] to access the discount code. Nicole Morgan can also provide a list of accommodations in Radium, Invermere and Panorama offering discounts for registrants.

The Building Attainable Housing Symposium is hosted by Community Futures East Kootenay and the Columbia Valley Housing Society and has received support through: Columbia Valley Community Foundation and Regional District of East Kootenay (Resident Directed Grants), Community Futures East Kootenay, and the Community Housing Transformation Center.
