Valley officer called to Fort McMurray
Columbia Valley RCMP Detachment acting NCO Cpl. Grant Simpson is among about 150 officers being deployed from British Columbia to Fort McMurray.
Simpson is being deployed as part of the South East District RCMP tactical team.
Staff Sgt. Rob Vermeulen of RCMP E-Division said B.C. officers from traffic service and tactical troop groups are being loaned at the request of Alberta RCMP.
The officers will be scattered to points where they are needed, dealing with a variety of safety concerns and increase police presence to deter looting and theft.
One person has so far been arrested for break and enter in Fort McMurray, as firefighters continue to battle spot fires and emergency services personnel work to assess damage.
