A step up and a Step Beyond

By Erin Knutson

The Community Connections Society of Southeast BC (CCSS BC), in partnership with B.C. Housing has opened its doors to showcase the new 40-bed shelter, which will officially open to the public later this month.

The Step Beyond shelter, a symbol of hope and a new beginning for the City of Cranbrook, is more than just a building; its modern, inclusive, and supportive design sets it apart, serving as a buffer for individuals in need of temporary housing.

“People who want or need help are welcome as long as they abide by the guidelines,” said CCSS BC Executive Director Nancy Reid, who facilitated a tour for media and guests on Aug. 14, along with members of her team and Director of Regional Development at B.C. Housing, Tyler Baker.

The facility is equipped with a state-of-the-art kitchen, a cafeteria, designated areas for relaxation and recreation, and measures to ensure the comfort and inclusivity of its guests. Additionally, it provides a secure environment with robust safety protocols in place to protect both staff and visitors.

“Our staff and volunteers ran food service daily without a kitchen at the Lazy Bear Lodge,” said Reid of the monumental effort over the years and well past its original purpose to help support clients during the pandemic.

Reid assures that the Step Beyond shelter is not just a place to stay, but a community that offers full access to a range of support services. These services are designed to help individuals navigate different options to suit their needs.

Having played a key role in the design and purpose of the shelter, Reid shares, “We are proud of what we’ve accomplished.”

From choosing linens to selecting soft blankets, bright colours, and private dorm-style beds, every detail was carefully considered to create an environment where people feel welcome and safe.

To the people who visit, Reid spoke about the name chosen for the shelter.

“We want to support people wherever they are on their journey, one small step at a time, to help them reach their goals and move beyond shelter life,” said Reid.
