Army Cadet Corp celebrates 76 years

Wow! 1813 Lord Strathcona Army Cadet Corp, Cranbrook, celebrated its 76th annual Ceremonial Review at Fort Steele Heritage Town on June 3.

The ‘Kennedy Award’ is presented to Warrant Officer Jewsbury.

The annual Ceremonial Review is the most important event of the cadet training year. This yearend parade is the Cadets’ opportunity to display what they have learned over the year to their families and assembled guests. After parade, guests are able to view the static displays and have cadets explain about what they learned. It is also the time when the Officers of the Corp are able to recognize and honour cadets with various awards.

During training year, Cadets work on completing their core level training program, along with learning hands on skills like Map & Compass, Survival, Bush Craft, hiking, mountain biking, first aid, marksmanship, abseiling and a lot more.

Cadets, youth 12 to 18, are motivated to improve their physical fitness, to work harder at their academic studies and to give back to their communities though volunteerism and citizenship activities.

The cadet program is a community-based organization that required the support of dedicated adult leaders to be successful. Adult leaders are needed to train, administer and supervise the youth involved in the cadet program. Training, pay and uniforms are provided for those that choose to join the Canadian Armed Forces as a Cadet Instructor Cadre (CIC) Officer.

‘Most Improved’ Award went to Sergeant N. Johnson.

CIC officers are not required to deploy oversees or be operational members of the Canadian Armed Forces. They are community youth leaders, making a difference at home.

The skills acquired through the training as a CIC Officer are transferrable to your regular employment.

Interested adults can become Volunteers with their local Corp or Squadron while going through the enrollment process.

The ‘Kennedy Award’ is presented to Warrant Officer Jewsbury, who has exemplified the values of the cadets program, as Mr. Jim Kennedy believed in. Presented by: Mrs. Kennedy to Warrant Officer Jewsbury.

‘Most Improved’ Award went to Sergeant N. Johnson who has excelled over the past year in his development, leadership, skills, and personal growth. Presented by: CI Thibodeau to Sergeant N. Johnson.

The ‘Top Senior NCO’ was awarded to Warrant Officer Smythe.

The ‘Top Senior NCO’ was awarded to Warrant Officer Smythe, who exemplified their role and have represented the core values of the program – leadership, loyalty, physical fitness, self-confidence, discipline, volunteerism, self-esteem, team work, perseverance and community spirit.
