Artists’ reception Saturday at Cranbrook Arts
What’s happening at Cranbrook Arts in October
Our upcoming Art Exhibit features two artists. The exhibit runs from September 25 to October 27.
Howard Roo started creating art as an extension to his ornamental iron business, Castilian Fountain & Metal. Finding himself highly motivated by stories of the Hibakusha (survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki), Howard decided to work on art that kept their stories alive. (His work is featured in the image above.)
Some of Howard’s early memories involve the “duck and run” drills at school during the Cold War. His art, and it seems, his life has been highly influenced by these particular memories and his ongoing attention to nuclear disasters such as Chernobyl and Fukushima. Howard states that he is a peaceful activist who creates art based on emotion and imagination.
Howard comes from a career as welder, fitter and fabricator – a man who is able to build and fix things. His artistic tools an extension of his career – anvils, benders and welders. But his most important tool? He’s firm in this – its his imagination and desire to tell a story!
Dale Sellers better known as Astarte will debut her work next month. Many will know the work of ManWoman, Astarte’s late husband but Astarte is an artist in her own right and we are very much looking forward seeing her work on our walls.
Please join us at a reception in the gallery at 1013 Baker St. for both these artists tomorrow, October 6 from 2 to 4 p.m.
