Baker Wild wows with stellar performances at Key City
By Erin Knutson
Mount Baker Wild Theatre (MBWT) captivated audiences with a unique rendition of its latest production, Legally Blonde: The Musical, at Key City Theatre this past week.
“Legally Blonde is a feel-good musical based on Heather Hach’s book with music and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin,” according to the MBWT program.
The two-hour show made possible through Musical Theatre International (MTI), demonstrated the sophistication and talent of the cast and crew under Emily McCue’s direction.
McCue and her team, including Musical Director Justin Swanson, captured the spirit of the 2001 movie starring Reese Witherspoon. The stellar cast carried the production, reaching a level of professionalism far beyond their high school years.
Hailey Conroy plays Elle Woods, Legally Blonde’s heroine and aspiring Harvard law student following a breakup with her long-time boyfriend Warner Huntington III, played by Finn McBurney.
Conroy carries the production with the help of a phenomenal supporting cast, including Edison Wilmot as Professor Callahan, Joelle Carlisle as Paulette Buonofonte and Hudson Gross as Emmett Forest.
True to the original, Woods wins a seat at Harvard Law School and transforms from a lovestruck schoolgirl to a serious and competent law student, eventually graduating at the top of her once skeptical class.
Through a myriad of scenes, choreography, sets, costumes, sound and lighting design, MBWT pulled off its latest production with aplomb while proving that a zebra can change its stripes.
“Despite many doubts, Elle’s journey at law school defies all expectations while staying true to herself,” said the MBWT.
