Bowling alley craft brewery pub nears approval
City of Cranbrook council Oct. 25 inched a craft brewery and pub kitchen proposal in the former Juniper Lanes Bowling Alley closer to reality.
The city received an application from Jesse Roberts on behalf of Red Brick Enterprise Ltd., for an amendment to the City of Cranbrook Zoning Bylaw. The property is located at 1400 – 4th Street North (former Juniper Lanes).
Council passed the third reading of City of Cranbrook Zoning Amendment Bylaw No. 4057, 2021 – 1400, 4th Street North – Red Brick Enterprise Ltd. on Monday night.
The city bylaw notes the zoning amendment will add âCraft breweryâ use to the C-2 Highway Commercial Zone, specific to the property.
The applicant has taken over the former Juniper Lanes Bowling Alley and the proposed zoning amendment will enable them to revitalize the property as a craft brewery and pub kitchen and customer seating in place of several bowling lanes.
Eight of the original 16 bowling lanes are intended to be retained for the use of the patrons.
The cityâs Advisory Planning Commission reviewed the proposed zoning amendment and recommended that council approve the amendment.
The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has indicated its interests are unaffected by the proposed zoning amendment.
âThere are a mix of commercial and low-density residential use designations in the immediate area. Staff notes that while the proposed (pub/restaurant) is not centrally located within the downtown, the property is situated within easy walking distance, and will add to the general vibrancy of the downtown area, as well as help maintain a unique legacy recreation / entertainment choice with the retained bowling lanes,â stated Engineering and Development Servicesâ Rob Price in a report to council.
While supportive of the craft brewery, adjacent property owner Cranbrook Arts expressed concerns around traffic flow and parking and urged the city to give âcareful considerationâ to it.
