Businesses step up to support Cranbrook Food Bank

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect every individual and organization in one way or another but has impacted those in need more profoundly than anyone else.

To assist in these difficult times, local businesses have risen to the challenge to create much-needed funds by selling locally branded t-shirts with all proceeds going to the Cranbrook Food Bank.

The owner of Sidekick Stickers, Jason De Rijk, explained how the t-shirt fund raiser program started.

“A local businessperson approached us and asked if there was some way that we could support a local organization that helps those who need it most. The idea to sell t-shirts was born, and within a few short days we had over a dozen businesses willing to contribute to the initial costs of production. Within a couple of weeks, we were rolling,” he said.

The Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce has jumped in to support the initiative by offering access to its online payment services. A website has been setup at shop.cranbrookchamber.com where people are invited to purchase and pick up at Sidekick Stickers, or, request free local delivery.

Manager of the Cranbrook Food Bank, Gerry Oviatt, explained how timely the initiative is and how the current pandemic has affected their organization and the people that it supports.

“The Cranbrook Food Bank relies primarily on volunteers and donations to provide our service to the community. During the pandemic, it is understandable that the economic uncertainty for most people has made it difficult, if not impossible to donate funds that they are relying on themselves.”

Gerry says that whenever there is a need, the community always rises to the challenge.

“Having local businesses support our organization during this time is very welcome and extraordinary considering that many of them are feeling the financial impact themselves. Once again, our community has risen to a challenge to do good for others, when they could be just as worried about themselves.”

The initial response has been great so far with over $800 raised since the first week the t-shirts were available for purchase. These high-quality t-shirts are available in Male, Female and Youth and cost $22.40 each.
