Candlelight vigil planned at MLA’s office this eve

Members of the East Kootenay Climate Hub and the public will be staging a candlelight vigil at Kootenay East MLA Tom Shypitka’s Cranbrook office.

The vigil, to begin at 5 p.m., is one of many planned at MLA offices around the province.

“Peaceful candlelight vigils are taking place across the province to remember those who have died in the heat dome, floods, tornados and other climate-related disasters in 2021, and to call for actions to confront the climate emergency and help prevent future deaths,” the EK Climate Hub explained.

Vigil participants are encouraged to bring candles in jars or LED lights, and to dress warmly and wear masks.

MLA Shypitka will be on hand to speak with constituents about the growing call for the provincial government to confront the climate emergency.

More than 345 diverse arts, business, community, environment, faith, health, Indigenous, labour, senior, and youth organizations have signed an open letter calling on the B.C. government to confront the climate emergency by implementing 10 urgent climate actions.

Check out the actions here: Signatories | Climate Actions.

MLA Shypitka’s constituency office is at 305-535 Victoria Avenue.
