Cannabis retail setback hearing upcoming
City of Cranbrook council Feb. 4 took the first two steps toward amending the city’s zoning regulations for cannabis retail stores, deleting the required setback distances between cannabis retail stores in C-1 and C-2 zones.
Council passed the first two readings of Zoning Amendment Bylaw No. 3960 – Cannabis retail setbacks amendment – opening the door for a public hearing Feb. 25, at 6 p.m., in council chambers.
The current regulations requires a minimum separation distance between cannabis retail stores of 30 metres in the C-1, Community Commercial Zone (downtown) and 50 metres in the C-2, Highway Commercial Zone (highway corridor).
Coun. Ron Popoff said he is pleased to see the setbacks possibly being eliminated, a direction established by council last month.
“It looks good. I think we need to take barriers away to business. Having buffers between businesses doesn’t make any sense to me,” he said.
