Capital works projects progressing across Cranbrook

A number of key projects in the City of Cranbrook’s 2025 Capital Works program are moving along well with several others in the queue to start up later this summer.

Administration provided council and the public with an update on all the projects on Monday night.

Construction is now underway for Phase 1 of the Victoria Avenue Sanitary Sewer Trunk replacement project.

Copcan Civil LP will upgrade and upsize the existing system from 6th Street North to 2nd Street North, addressing some sanitary capacity concerns. Roadway repaving (pictured below) of the full width of Victoria on that section will follow. During the construction, Victoria Avenue will be reduced to one lane in each direction through to the end of October.

Progress continues on the reconstruction of 6th Street South. The new watermain, service lines, and water meters have been installed by Gally Equipment Services Ltd., along with upgraded storm infrastructure to support the redesigned roadway. A short pause in construction is underway due to recent rain, allowing subgrade soils to dry before final road structure is built. The project remains on schedule.

Gally Equipment has also completed the installation of a new fire hydrant on 18th Street South. This important safety upgrade was delivered ahead of schedule and on budget.

The contract for Phase 4 of the Sewer Lagoons Project has been awarded to Lambourne Environmental.

Desludging of Cell 2 (pictured above) began in early July and is proceeding as planned, with the expected volume of sludge having been successfully removed.

Completion of Cell 2 desludging is anticipated before the end of the month, followed by the reinstatement of aeration and the start of work on Cell 3. Installation of new airlines and diffusers will follow. Baffle curtain installation is planned for fall 2025.

Thanks to a $500,000 Active Transportation grant from the Province of BC, McPhee Road is set for a major upgrade. The project is to include a new raised and separated multi-use path between Theatre Road and Industrial Road F. As part of the work, this Priority 1 roadway will be fully resurfaced, taking advantage of optimal timing with grant funding. Design work is complete, and contractor procurement closed mid-July.

Staff are now evaluating submissions. Construction is scheduled to run from mid-August through mid- October.

The city has officially launched its City Water Supply UV Disinfection Facility project. Following a competitive proposal process, Kiewit has been selected as the project contractor. Collaborative design meetings are now underway between the city, Kiewit, and consulting engineers to develop detailed plans for the facility, ensuring effectiveness and cost-efficiency. Further design updates will be shared as the project progresses.
