CFES’ guide to cozy campfires In Cranbrook
Whether you’re roasting marshmallows, swapping spooky stories, or simply soaking in the warmth under the stars, campfires are a great way to enjoy Cranbrook’s beautiful evenings.
But before you strike a match, let’s make sure your fire is friendly — to your neighbours and to nature.
Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services (CFES) highlights some important things to remember to enjoy a fire safely within city limits:
General Campfire Guidelines
Keep it simple, keep it safe:
- Only burn charcoal or seasoned wood — no yard waste or construction materials, please!
- Always supervise your fire — a moment’s inattention can spark trouble.
- Set up on a flat, fireproof surface, away from roofs, branches, and wires.
- Use an appliance with a spark arrestor (openings no wider than 0.5 inches).
- Keep at least 5 feet of space between your fire and any buildings, fences, or property lines.
Fire Pits
Classic and cozy, with just the right touch of safety:
- Max size: 24 inches wide, 20 inches high.
- Keep 16 inches of clearance from grass and greenery.
- Must be surrounded by non-combustible material (think brick, concrete, or stone).
- Stay at least 10 feet away from anything that could catch fire — buildings, fences, patio furniture, etc.
Chimeneas & Portable Fireplaces
Stylish and snug — but they’ve got rules too:
- No indoor or balcony use — they’re outdoor-only!
- On a wooden deck? Use a non-combustible base, with 16 inches of clearance and at least 12 inches off the surface.
- On the ground? Keep a 16-inch buffer from vegetation, and again, raise it 12 inches up.
- The firebox should be no more than 30 inches wide, and 16–24 inches deep.
- Chimneys should be secure and at least 8 feet tall — this helps smoke rise and keeps you breathing easy.
Campfires can be wonderful things, but let’s keep them safe, respectful, and fun for everyone. Not sure if your setup meets the mark? Fire & Emergency Services is always happy to help by calling 250-426-2325.
And remember: if it’s too windy, too dry, or fire restrictions are in place — skip the s’mores and keep the flames out.
