CFES permitted to attack fires outside service area

The City of Cranbrook June 30 extended its fire protection boundaries because of increased wildfire risk to the city.

The extension allowed Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services (CFES) to take on a fire in the JimSmith Lake area July 9.

At the conclusion of last night’s (July 17) council meeting, Mayor Lee Pratt explained to council and those in the gallery why the city was providing the fire department with authority to operate outside the city’s fire protection limits.

City of Cranbrook Fire Services Bylaw No. 3676 Subsection 3.2. (c) provides the authority for the fire department to respond beyond our boundaries, Pratt said.

“Recognizing that conditions exist in the area, where a fire occurring beyond Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services response area may pose an imminent threat to city property or property protected through a fire service agreement, I have exercised the authority prescribed by subsection 3.2. (c) of City of Cranbrook Fire Services Bylaw No. 3676.

“This subsection provides the ability for Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services to extend service beyond its jurisdictional boundary with the prior approval of the Mayor, on behalf of council if the Mayor advises council at the next meeting of council, which I am doing tonight,” Pratt related.

“This authorization will remain in effect until the Fire Index Rating for the area returns to Danger Class 2.  Response will be at the discretion of the Director of Fire & Emergency Services or Officer In Charge,” he concluded.

“It’s for the protection of our city,” he said.
