City explores partnership with Habitat For Humanity
Habitat for Humanity is seeking to expand its presence in Cranbrook and has expressed interest in developing housing for affordable home ownership.
Habitat for Humanity Southeast BC brings communities together to help local families build strength, stability, and independence through affordable homeownership.
They don’t give away homes, they offer families a hand up, not a handout. Habitat Partner Families help build their own homes and purchase them through affordable, no-down-payment mortgages geared to their income.
On Monday night in support of this initiative, City of Cranbrook council granted Habitat For Humanity’s request to prepare a proposal to the city for a potential residential housing project on a city-owned parcel at 2600-4th Street South, which will require site investigations and review to ensure this site would be suitable.
Affordable home ownership continues to be a significant need in Cranbrook. By exploring this opportunity, the city continues to take meaningful steps toward addressing local housing challenges in alignment with its Housing Strategy and Council’s strategic priorities.
This potential partnership builds on a successful past collaboration between the city and Habitat for Humanity in 2014, where land was provided for a home in Slaterville (file image shown above).
Staff have been working with Habitat For Humanity Southeast BC since September 2024, exploring opportunities for this affordable housing project. Further updates will be provided as this process moves forward.
