City staff directed to develop AI policy and guidelines
Reacting to a resolution forwarded by Councillor Mike Peabody, City of Cranbrook council Oct. 16 directed city administration to create policy and guidelines around how city staff, mayor and council use artificial intelligence (AI).
“These guidelines will aim to ensure the responsible and ethical use of AI systems, protect sensitive information, and minimize the risk of generating incorrect or biased content,” the resolution concluded.
Below is Coun. Peabody’s resolution to council.
WHEREAS
Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems have the potential to greatly benefit our municipality through enhanced efficiency and service delivery.
AND WHEREAS
Traditional AI otherwise known as Classic AI or conventional AI detects patterns to predict, automate and generate insights. Generative AI is a class of AI that lets a user submit a request with relevant data to guide content generation such as text, images, audio, and video.
AND WHEREAS
Generative AI is an evolving technology that has limitations and unique risks. Including, but not limited to, sharing of confidential information, and producing false or incorrect content.
THEREFORE
Council directs Administration to develop policy and guidelines around the use of AI for City Staff, Mayor, and Council.
