City to apply for grants for World Cup Live Viewing Party

City of Cranbrook council Monday night approved staff applying for the 2026 Community Event Support provincial grant program for a grant of up to $50,000 and to also apply for the 2026 Community Event Support provincial grant program for Public Live Match Viewing with a grant request of up to $150,000.

The FIFA World Cup 26 will take place from June 11 to July 19, and the Province of B.C. wants to help communities across the province take part in the excitement. The 2026 Community Event Support Fund is meant to support free, public events that bring people together, celebrate sport, build community pride, showcase culture, and support local economic activity during the World Cup.

In Cranbrook, city staff have had early conversations with Visit Cranbrook and are optimistic about the opportunity.

Visit Cranbrook has offered to help promote the event and contribute $7,500 toward funding. Initial discussions with local businesses have also been encouraging, especially with a non-profit society involved in running the event.

Staff have also confirmed with the province that any profits from the event can be used however the City of Cranbrook chooses.
