COTR and SD5 host BC Skills competitions

College of the Rockies’ main campus played host to four skills contests for the Kootenay Region in the Skills Canada competition on Friday, February 19.

The competition was open to individuals under the age of 24 who were not yet at full journeyman status. College of the Rockies hosted the Carpentry, Cabinet Making, Welding and Public Speaking skills competitions. While Robotics and TV/Video Production competitions took place at Mount Baker Secondary School.

Winners of the regional competitions will advance to the Provincials in Abbotsford in April where they will have the chance of advancing to the National and World Skills competitions.

In an effort to further encourage youth to discover trades there was representation from throughout the city’s schools taking part in such challenges as Spaghetti Bridge Building, Newspaper Furniture Construction, and Gravity Car Design and Racing.

Cabinet Making: Tyler Daigle (1st), Nike Blackmore (2nd), Conrad Cameron (3rd);

Carpentry: Kyle Klippenstein, Adrien Victor, Trinity Andrew;

Public Speaking: Kelsey Ackert, Hannah Boulton, Dakota Smith;

Welding: Travis Lachkovics, Braydon Hutchenson, Greg Markholm;

Welding ACE-IT: Justin Evans, Chris Shail, Cole Bendis.

Junior Skills

Gravity Cars: Finley Campbell/Carter Rasmussen, first; Prezton Stewart/ Nicholas Butler and Nathan Kelley/Tyler Butler, second; Riley Featherling/Thomas Murphy, third.

Spaghetti Bridge: Noah McFadzen/Cole Kenyon; Ezra Bowden/Dylan Bradford; Chase Currie/Colten Brunell.

Newspaper furniture Challenge: Connor Borrowski/Corey Hamalek; Harper Harris/Jaden Reeves; Caius Willems/Tyrell Gravelle.
