Council considering secondary suites applications
In a bid to address the shortage of rental units in the City of Cranbrook, city council March 11 entertained two rezoning applications for legal secondary suites.
Council recessed a public hearing Monday, March 11, on a zoning amendment to allow for a legal secondary suite for a property at 3537 Mount Royal Drive.
The city’s Official Community Plan (OCP) recognizes the importance for the community to maintain a supply of rental housing in a variety of areas across the community. City building inspectors visited the site and confirmed the home can meet all city bylaw and B.C. Building Code requirements for a legal suite.
Council recessed the hearing, so staff can follow up with legal counsel about a couple of items. Staff will provide those findings to council at its regular meeting March 25, at which time the public hearing will resume. Learn more about this zoning amendment here.
Meantime, council also gave two readings to a proposed rezoning application to allow for infill development of a vacant lot for a single-family home with a legal secondary suite on the basement level.
Council referred the application to the Advisory Planning Commission (APC) for comment.
A public hearing on this application is set for Monday, March 25 at 6 p.m. at city hall
