Council provides pre-approval for big budget items
City of Cranbrook council last night (Dec. 9) unanimously endorsed pre-approval for the 2020 Capital Works Program, as well as for the replacement of the Western Financial Place roof and the hiring of two new full-time city staff members.
Mayor Lee Pratt explained council pre-approves such items “so staff can go out for tender and RFPs (requests for proposals) earlier in the year; so we can get the jump on construction season” and seek better pricing.
The proposed projects utilizing this funding are a continuation of projects that have previously been brought forward to council as a part of our multi-year asset management and project planning and delivery process. A list of projects will be brought forward in January.
The pre-approval request is for $3,604,339 from the proposed 2020 Budget. Sources as follows: $1,577,439 road dedicated tax; $70,000 general tax; $816,900 gas tax; $580,000 water user fees; $560,000 sewer user fees.
Council Monday night also unanimously adopted a request for pre-approval for the 2020 Western Financial Place roof replacement.
Pre-approval of these funds allows staff to continue to move forward with Western Financial Place (pictured above) roof replacement. Pre-approval allows staff to secure project management, designs and tenders so they can be issued early in 2020. This gives staff the best opportunity for competitive pricing and early start and completion of projects. This project will see the final phase of the roofing completed, which is the arena barrel roof.
The pre-approval request is for $2.69 million from the proposed 2020 Budget.
Council also unanimously pre-approved the addition of two new full-time city staff positions
The city will be hiring a Senior Information Systems Specialist and a Manager of Building and Bylaw Services,
The hirings will increase the annual budget, starting in 2020, by $240,000. The amount includes wages and benefits for the two positions.
Pre-approval was requested in order for staff to begin the recruitment process immediately.
