Councillor Lynnette Wray to seek mayor’s chair

City of Cranbrook Councillor Lynnette Wray has announced she will seek the mayor’s chair in this October’s municipal election.

“After much thought and reflection, and thanks to the support of family, friends, and community members, I am humbled and honoured to announce my intention to run for Mayor of the City of Cranbrook in the 2026 fall election,” said Wray in a media release.

“Utilizing my 10 years of credit union governance experience and 30-year career with local non-profits, I have worked diligently over the last three years to make a positive impact as a Cranbrook city councillor, supporting excellence in governance and operations, seeking pragmatic, win-win solutions, and enhancing communication and collaboration. Looking to the future, I believe that I can best serve our community by putting my name forward as a candidate to be Cranbrook’s next mayor.

“Here in beautiful ʔamakʔis Ktunaxa, ʔakisqakⱡiʔit is my adopted hometown, and I care deeply about Cranbrook’s long-term success and vibrancy. There’s no doubt that we have more than a few challenges, many of which are shared by communities across B.C. and Canada, including the escalating cost of replacing aging infrastructure, the need for housing across the full continuum, external global economic factors that adversely affect our local businesses, and the mental health/addictions crisis.

“At the same time, as a community, we have so many strengths and opportunities to build on: our creative and dedicated local business people; our vibrant and resilient non-profit sector; our leading role as a regional centre for education, health, and government services; and the natural beauty that surrounds us, just to name a few.”

The one-term councillor, who captured the most votes of any candidate in the 2022 election, said she’s ready for the run up to the election.

“Over the coming months, I look forward to having many thoughtful conversations with my fellow residents about our challenges and opportunities and how we can work together to build a prosperous, healthy, and inclusive community. Please feel free to reach out to me, and let’s talk,” she said.

“In closing, I would like to share my sincere thanks and appreciation with Mayor Price and all members of council as well as with the city’s management and staff; it is an honour and a privilege to work with such dedicated and caring people.
