Cranbrook crews respond to Baker Hill fire

Crews with the Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services attended and successfully extinguished a structure fire in the Baker Hill area of the city, Monday Dec. 6.

The fire department responded to a call for assistance at 205 10th Avenue South about 8:30 p.m., with four firefighters and one engine arriving on scene approximately four minutes later. Upon arrival, fire crews identified flames showing on the northeast side of the structure and subsequently called in additional resources.

Fire fighters had the fire extinguished before 9 p.m. Crews remained on scene until approximately 10:30 p.m. A rescue team did discover and remove one patient from the structure. The patient was transported to the East Kootenay Regional Hospital in serious condition by ambulance. Fire and smoke damage to the property is considered extensive.

Fire investigators were on scene Tuesday morning, as the cause of the fire is still unknown at this time. Estimated property damage is approximately $200,000. More information will be made available once the investigation is complete. Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services wants to remind residents and business owners alike, that smoke alarms detect and alert people to fire in its early stages, giving them the time to escape safely.

When working properly, smoke alarms can mean the difference between life and death in a fire. Smoke alarms must be maintained properly and tested regularly to ensure their effectiveness.
