Cranbrook firefighters knock down grass fire at Moir

A grass fire early Tuesday afternoon led to a quick response by Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services.

The detachment received a call at approximately 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 9, to a fire at the Moir Park lands off of Industrial Road G.

An initial compliment of four firefighters immediately responded before calling out for an additional six members. In total, 10 firefighters and four apparatus responded to the fire.

“At this time the fire is believed to be human-caused,” said Dan MacKinnon, Deputy Director of Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services. “There were no reported injuries to the public, however, one of our firefighting members was taken to the hospital as a precaution due to the extreme heat and firefighting conditions.”

The fire was approximately 200 feet by 200 feet and started in the grass before spreading to old logging debris, increasing the difficulty of the firefighting response.

Firefighters have since managed to control the fire.

Crews will remain at the scene Tuesday evening to continue mop up and clean up of any remaining hot spots to ensure the fire is fully extinguished.
