Cranbrook Public Library changing opening hours
New opening hours come into effect on Thursday, May 1
The Cranbrook Public Library, like many local organizations and residents, faces significant financial pressure due to rising operating costs. As a cornerstone of community access to free information resources, programs, and safe spaces, the library remains committed to maintaining high-quality services while living within its financial means.

Funding primarily relies on Provincial grants and contributions from the City of Cranbrook and the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK).
To address these challenges, the Library’s Board and staff collaboratively identified solutions to preserve core services and programming. “Our priority is to minimize disruptions for patrons who rely on evening and weekend access,” said Ursula Brigl, Chief Librarian. “By adjusting hours strategically, we can sustain our physical and digital collections while keeping our doors open.”
The updated schedule retains Sunday access with reduced hours and maintains two evening openings weekly. This decision reflects community feedback received during the 2024 strategic plan process and the city’s 2025 Budget Survey, which highlighted strong public support for accessible library services.
“Our community values the library as a hub for access to information, learning and connection,” emphasized Board Chair Lee-Ann Crane.
As a designated warming/cooling center and clean air space, the library also plays a vital role in our community.
“The Cranbrook Public Library isn’t just about borrowing material and attending programs, it is also a warming, cooling and clean air centre for our community —it’s about ensuring everyone has a place to gather, work, and find relief during extreme weather,” Brigl added.
The Cranbrook Public Library continues to advocate for sustainable funding to meet growing demands while thanking the community for its support.
