Cranbrook pushes for regional look into time change

City of Cranbrook council is requesting to have discussions with other local governments in the East Kootenay about the region not being included in Monday’s time zone change announcement by the province.

The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) has already indicated that this matter will be coming forward to the board for discussion and consideration at a future date.

The announcement is not to affect the East Kootenay, meaning the region would remain on Mountain Time in sync with Alberta year-around, while the rest of the province would remain in the new Pacific Time.

The provincial announcement also indicated that it was up to the local governments in the East Kootenay to decide whether they wanted to be part of the change, or not.

“As a council, we want to meet with all of our regional local government partners around the RDEK Board table to see if a change is wanted here and to make sure our approach is coordinated,” said Mayor Wayne Price.

“This announcement by the province on Monday, was as much a surprise to council as it was to the rest of the community and the region. We understand the concerns and the frustrations our residents and business owners are raising – we hear you loud and clear.”
