Cranbrook RCMP conducts educational traffic initiative

Members of the Cranbrook RCMP Oct. 30 conducted a 30-minute traffic initiative near Mount Baker Secondary School with a focus on educating new drivers and promoting safe driving habits.

During the initiative, officers conducted several traffic stops, providing education in place of fines.

In total, 17 “Fail to Display ‘N’” offences were observed, each of which carries a fine of $109 under the Motor Vehicle Act. To help new drivers stay compliant, officers distributed a limited number of “N” magnets; however, supplies were quickly depleted. Police encourage anyone missing their “N” to visit the Service BC office to obtain a replacement.

In addition to “N” infractions, officers also addressed several other common driving offences, including: Failing to display “L”, Driving contrary to licence restrictions (e.g., carrying too many passengers), Use of a cellphone while driving, no seatbelt, failing to produce a driver’s licence and vehicle defects

Officers also took the opportunity to educate one youth that obstruction during a police interaction is a criminal offence, highlighting the importance of cooperation and respect during traffic stops.

Had officers issued fines instead of education, yesterday’s initiative would have resulted in approximately $5,740 in penalties.

“The goal of this enforcement was education, not punishment,” said Constable Carlee Munro, School Coordinator and Youth Officer. “We want to remind young drivers of their responsibilities and the importance of maintaining good driving habits.”

Cranbrook RCMP will continue to conduct similar educational initiatives aimed at improving road safety and supporting positive driver behaviour within the community.
