Cranbrook Tourism has launched the CBK Backyard Bucket List just in time for summer.

The Bucket List is full of ideas on how to get more out of your backyard this year.

The Province of British Columbia is now in Phase Three of reopening, which is marked by a return to non-essential travel. British Columbians are again being encouraged to Explore B.C but with more planning, preparation and care.

“We know that an important part of supporting our communities this summer will be by taking in local experiences and supporting local businesses,” said Executive Director of Cranbrook Tourism, Kristy Jahn-Smith. “Public Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry has advocated for open spaces, and few faces as being the best way to get out safely. Those are things that come naturally here in the Kootenays.”

The summer months are critical for many tourism related businesses and in the weeks ahead support for B.C. businesses will make a positive difference for the tourism economy. Tourism is one of the most important economic sectors in the Kootenay Rockies region. The region welcomes 2.3 million overnight visitors annually which translates to approximately $2.5 billion in tourism revenue.

If you are from Cranbrook, Creston or Calgary, the East Kootenay is your backyard when it comes to traveling this summer.

Whether you are a resident planning a staycation or a visitor looking for safe and respectful ways to explore Cranbrook and area, the Bucket List has ideas for how you can discover the very best in the region.

The CBK Backyard Bucket List is more fun than you can fit into one summer. Not only will it supply inspiration but will have the directions and how-to information to take you all the way. Every Monday new bucket list ideas will be published on the Cranbrook Tourism blog.

For additional considerations around travel this summer visitors are encouraged to ‘Know Before you Go’ and travel safely with these tips:

1. PLAN AHEAD
   Take extra time to research and plan your trip in advance.
   BE RESPECTFUL
   Keep in mind that you’re a guest of your fellow BC residents when travelling and respect the guidelines and protocols they’ve put in place in their community during this time.
   3. TRAVEL IN SMALLER GROUPS
   Travelling with fewer people makes it easier for you to practise physical distancing in public and may have less of an impact on the destination.
   4. MORE TIME, FEWER LOCATIONS
   Instead of checking in and out of multiple destinations, choose one destination and one accommodation for your entire trip, and use that as a ‘home-base’ for exploring all the destinations nearby.
   5. PACK ESSENTIALS
   If you’re heading to a more rural area of the province, stock up with the essentials before you leave home (i.e. groceries and PPE).
   6. STAY APART, STAY SAFE
   Practise physical distancing and frequent handwashing hygiene to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
   7. LEAVE NO TRACE
   When exploring BC’s outdoors, always leave it in a better state than when you arrived.
   8. BE ADVENTURESMART
   No matter what outdoor activity you are planning, you must be prepared. Remember to follow the three Ts—trip planning, training, and taking the essentials.
   9. BE CALM, BE PATIENT, BE KIND
   Remember, activities may take longer than usual, or places may be at capacity when you arrive. Have a Plan B.
   10. SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES
   BC’s tourism businesses are eager to welcome you back this summer and your support is more crucial than ever.
