Deer hunt around city underway until Jan. 31
An important reminder – a provincially mandated deer hunt will take place around the outskirts of Cranbrook started January 5 and goes until January 31.
The City of Cranbrook is reminding hunters to know exactly where municipal boundaries are and to follow all local and provincial regulations.
Hunting on private property without permission is not allowed, and restricted areas such as the Community Forest remain off-limits under provincial law.
The province announced the targeted hunt to help reduce the risk of chronic wasting disease by lowering deer density, removing potentially infected animals, and increasing monitoring to protect wildlife health and local food and recreational resources.
Within the City of Cranbrook, discharging a firearm or bow is prohibited under Firearms Bylaw No. 4220, 2025, except for authorized personnel. Violations may result in fines of up to $5,000 or up to six months in jail.
Provincial regulations also prohibit shooting within 100 metres of homes, schools, parks, or other occupied areas, and within or across road allowances of numbered highways or provincially maintained roads. Hunters must also have landowner permission to discharge a firearm on private property.
