Dycar gets city approval to grow recreational cannabis
City of Cranbrook council last night (Feb. 24) unanimously passed a Zoning Bylaw Amendment that allows Dycar Pharmaceuticals to produce recreational cannabis, as well as medical.
Council gave third reading and adopted Zoning Amendment Bylaw No. 3999, 2020, which deletes and adds definitions, changes the general regulations and M-2 zone permitted uses to reflect the current terminology for cannabis operations and to ensure Dycar operations are compliant with city zoning.
The vote followed a public hearing with no one addressing council on the matter.
On February 10, council passed the first and second readings of the bylaw, which prompted it going to a city Advisory Planning Committee for review, receiving its recommendation. It was sent the bylaw to Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure for approval.
A city Development Services report explains: “Specifically, the proposed amendment does the following: 1. Deletes the definition of ‘Medical Marihuana (sic) Grow Operation (MMGO)’ and add new definitions for ‘Cannabis Standard Cultivation Operation’, ‘Cannabis Standard Processing Operation’ and ‘Cannabis Sale for Medical Purposes Operation’ 2. Changes general regulations Section 4.20 to reflect the changes in terminology and definitions, and 3. Add ‘Cannabis Standard Cultivation Operation’, ‘Cannabis Standard Processing Operation’ and ‘Cannabis Sale for Medical Purposes Operation’ to the M-2, Light Industrial Zone.”
Prior to the vote, Coun. John Hudak noted the amendments will allow the business to proceed as best considering cannabis legalization and could boost jobs in the community as a result.
“It was a building that has been re-purposed and it’s something that could be really good for Cranbrook,” he said.
