East Kootenay Air & Army Cadets Home-towner

Army Cadet Kenneth Jewsbury was one of the cadets from 1813 Lord Strathcona Cadet Corp who traveled to France, to attend the 100th Anniversary Services at Vimy Ridge.

Kenneth enjoys meeting new people from across Canada, whom he meets during summer training courses and he is looking forward to meeting many people during their oversea trip.

Warrant Officer Jewsbury feels that the importance of Vimy Ridge and its 100th Anniversary is, “it is critical to the remembrance of the soldiers whom gave their lives for our freedom and peace of the world. To remember the young men that sacrificed everything, who left their families, friends and other loved ones behind to fight in the bloodiest war in history. To raise awareness that horrible things have happened on this planet and have great costs, with very little reward. The Vimy Memorial symbolizes bravery and integrity of Canadians.”

During his time in cadets, Kenneth has learned about teaching others, outdoor skills (like building shelters), leading a group and public speaking. He has participated in general training, basic fitness and sports and fitness and sports instructors summer training courses. He is hoping to be selected to attend the Para Course before leaving the program.

Inside and outside of cadets, Kenneth enjoys biking, snowshoeing, hiking and table-top games.

The aim of the National Cadet program is to develop in youth the attributes of good citizenship and leadership, promote physical fitness and stimulate the interest of youth in sea, land and air activities of the Canadian Armed Forces. Canadian youth aged 12 to 18 are encouraged to learn more about the cadet programs in their community. Though the program is military based, there is no obligation to for a cadet to join the forces.
