Firefighters aid BCWS to contain fire near city’s edge

The Cranbrook Fire Department responded to an interface fire on Tuesday, June 10, at the edge of the City of Cranbrook’s northern boundary alongside the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS).

The wildfire was approximately 30 metres by 60 metres and beginning to accumulate momentum when crews arrived at the scene.

Six members from the Cranbrook Fire Department and four members from BC Wildfire Services worked collaboratively to control the blaze. Crews will remain at the scene to continue monitoring hot spots.

The wildfire is not expected to grow beyond its current boundaries at this time.

There were no reported injuries and no structures are at risk. An investigation into the cause of the fire continues.

“We are thankful for the ongoing support and expertise of the BC Wildfire Service members who support us here in the Southeast Fire Centre. We work closely with staff at the Zone office and appreciate the commitment to community safety that they demonstrate year after year,” said Scott Driver, Fire Chief of the Cranbrook Fire Department.

“The frequency of interface fires, in addition to the steadily growing severity of wildfires in general, necessitates that we closely work together as public safety agencies,” added Driver. “We at the Cranbrook Fire Department are grateful for the team of men and women that do such a great job in the southeast corner of the province.”
