Firefighters seek Santa tour memories

Cranbrook Professional Fire Fighters Local 1253 members are always so busy catering to the needs of Santa Claus that they’ve missed out on keeping a clear record of their annual Christmas Eve tours through the city over the years.

Every year the firefighters with Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services welcome Santa Claus to the Key City for a tour through the city. That the magical one has the time, when his present-distributing deadline is before him, to bless Cranbrook residents with a hearty ho-ho-ho, a wave and a smile, is a gift for all.

And local fire fighters want to create a memory bank. They are asking residents to help them out by sharing memories and more leading up to this year’s tour, Sunday evening (Dec. 24).

“What’s your oldest memory of the Cranbrook Fire Fighters annual Santa Claus run on Christmas Eve? The actual start date many years ago is still a mystery. Share your stories, memories or photos. We’d love to hear from you,” the firefighters ask on their Facebook page.

They are already getting plenty of answers.

“My father-in-law was a firefighter; says Santa being pulled by fire truck dates back to 1970,” notes Sandra Sudo Nelligan.

Nanette Cyr Pergentile added: “1992; we were building our house and only had the subfloor on. Santa came by and told us to hurry up and get the chimney up! LOL.”

Amy Berke shared: “When my family first moved here, we didn’t know about Santa going out on Christmas Eve. We were coming home from our friend’s home and could hear the sirens over by where our home was. Needless to say we were relieved to see Santa and not our home on fire.”

Robin Pinchak shared a memory of her father. “My Dad Wimpy Lode would leave us kids every time on Christmas Eve to go he said help Santa, I remember seeing Santa waving at me and not knowing that was my Dad. I love the memories he has given so many people and traditional Christmases. I sure miss him and would love any pictures if someone has any.”

So if you have any memories you can share with the firefighters – please pass them along. Share on their Facebook page or send them to the hall.
