Gold Creek Dam repairs covered by reserve fund

City of Cranbrook council Jan. 13 approved a budget increase of $63,119 from the city Water Capital Reserve to fund the October 2024 emergency repairs to Gold Creek Dam.

In October 2024, the Gold Creek Dam experienced another major failure where the structural posts that supported the platform for operating the control valve failed. The two posts closest to the crest of the dam failed inwards and down causing major stress on the control valve rendering it inoperable, a city Engineering and Development Services report outlined.

This was caused by a void that has formed around the intake pipe due to the ongoing piping failure. In order to repair the control valve and return it to an operational state removal of the existing platform and intake screen was required. Once removed operation was restored to the control valve and a new temporary platform and intake screen was installed, the city explained.

The work for the repair was completed in mid-November and the final bill totaled in December 2024.

“These emergency repairs were necessary to maintain operations of the dam and intake, and the repairs will allow for easier operation of the intake valve during construction of the new dam when that project commences,” the city noted.
