Honouring the Grandmother Tree
Over the past three years, St. Mary’s School students have enjoyed learning and exploring in the “special place,” close to the school.
There stood once, a 105-year old Cottonwood tree, which provided shade and stood strong and tall whole watching over the children learning about trees, animals, the water and the land. Students also built shelters and played many outdoor themed games.
This past November, our ‘Grandmother Tree’ was cut down due to being deemed unwell and a safety issue.
We are grateful to the City of Cranbrook parks crews, that made an outdoor classroom with parts of the tree for students and community to continue to learn from the teachings of our Grandmother tree.
Students wrote letters to the city staff and the Grandmother tree to share their gratitude.
Please free to visit our special place and the Grandmother tree outdoor classroom with your family.
